What is Pet Play? The Animal Fetish Explained

What is pet play

There’s a fetish for everyone, so they say, we all have that one thing that gets us hot under the collar. Well, for some of you, that is a pet play fetish. So what exactly is a pet play fetish, you wonder? This bdsm roleplay often involves at least two people; one partner takes on the role of an animal, usually a dog or cat (can be any animal), while the other partner takes on the role of the owner or trainer.

The handler can either dish out love and affection to their playful pet or punishment for their naughty behaviour, becoming the disciplinarian their pet needs and craves.

The roleplaying fun is only limited to your imagination; the pet can be as playful or disobedient as they desire, while the trainer can be as dominant or forgiving as they need to be.

Some of the most common types of pets to roleplay are puppies, kittens and ponies, but the choice really is all yours.

One thing that springs to mind when thinking of pet play is the scene in Big Brother, where George Galloway acted like a cat. The politician got down on all fours and purred like a cat, while a housemate scratched his ears. This scene highlighted pet play and brought it to the public’s attention.

Collars and Leads

Bondage collars and leads are a must-have bit of kit to engage in pet roleplaying. Slip a collar around your playful pet’s neck as a sign of ownership. Collars come in a range of decorative designs and materials for a variety of looks. They feature an o-ring, which allows you to attach a lead of your choice.

Once your pet has their collar and lead, you can take them for a walk. Hopefully, they’ll behave and walk at your side; if not, maybe a bit of punishment is required. A sharp tug of the lead will surely keep them in line.

Whips and Floggers

Now, if you are the trainer or handler, you will need something to discipline your pet; this is usually a whip or a flogger. After all, your naughty domestic pet or wild animal will need taming to keep them in line.

Cages and Crates

A cage or crate is intended for the pet; it can be used as their safe place or to contain them as a form of punishment if they’ve been disobedient.

Why indulge in Pet Play?

Like any fetish, people have them for a wide range of reasons, as every person is unique. A person who indulges in pet play usually gains sexual pleasure from doing so. Although some people who take part in pet play simply enjoy dressing up and don’t do it for sexual reasons. They might do it to express themselves, create emotional bonding or for stress relief.

Some may thoroughly enjoy being humiliated, for example, if they’re playing the role of the pet and they’re forced to crawl or eat from the floor. Being dominated and degraded is all part of the fun for some participants.

Then there’s the person who takes on the role of the trainer/owner. They may love acting out the role of the dominant one who lavishes punishment on their naughty pet, giving them full control over their pet.

Others may just love role-playing in general, giving them an escape from normality and a chance to indulge in a spot of fantasy. Life can be stressful at times and full of responsibility, and taking part in roleplay can relieve some of your daily tension and provide a healthy outlet for escape.

How to get into Pet Play

If you’ve never taken part in pet play but you’ve suddenly started becoming curious about it, start small and take it slow. You can totally enjoy pet play alone or with a partner. If you have a partner, broach the subject with them and open up conversations about it. Your lover should be pleased you’ve shared your interest with them and hopefully will enjoy trying new things.

You will then need to determine which role you and your lover will take, who will be the pet, and who will be the owner. The one becoming the pet will need to decide what animal they are going to be, although they might already have a good idea of this.

The best way is to start slow, get down on all fours and get to grips with having four legs. Maybe communicate as your chosen animal and let out a woof or a meow, depending on what you are. It may seem strange at first, but you’ll soon get used to your new animal side. At this stage, there’s no need to invest in props or costumes, take it slow, have fun and see where the role-playing takes you.

Choose a Safe Word

Before the fun and games begin, it’s important to establish a safe word. This is vital to make sure that if things get a bit too much or either of you feels uncomfortable, you can easily let each other know.

Your chosen word can be anything you decide, just make sure you are both fully aware of it.

As an alternative to a safe word, you could use a physical action instead. For example, clapping or dropping an item.

Finding a community

Reaching out and discovering like-minded people who enjoy the same things as you can be extremely beneficial. It can open up your world to new possibilities, fun and shared experiences.

A quick Google search of Pet Play Communities near me brings up a whole host of suggestions for different meet-up places. Check out puppyplaycommunity.org for a list of groups in the UK.

If you join a community, make it clear from the start that you’re a beginner. This will avoid any uncomfortable experiences.
