So What Exactly Is Sadomasochism?

Have you ever asked your partner if you could tie them up and place nipple clamps on them while you inflict pain on their groin region? Or have you ever watched an adult movie and got hot and bothered from seeing someone get walked all over in 6-inch stiletto heels? If so, join the many others who receive sexual pleasure from inflicting pain onto others, otherwise known as sadomasochism.
When figuring out precisely what sadomasochism is, things can get a bit complicated.

While we often see this in the BDSM culture, some argue that they don’t actively practise the lifestyle but enjoy watching others in pain. Some find it funny, while others receive sexual gratification. While sadists and masochists are always the dominant players, some switch roles and sometimes are the submissive player.

You probably already knew that the S and M in BDSM stand for sadomasochism. People who regularly practise the kink often call themselves sexual sadists and, as previously stated, will switch between being dominant and submissive. It’s important to understand that all players have mutual consent and that what may seem like sexual violence is sensual pleasure. Often the dominant player will inflict pain on their submissive to satisfy their sexual need and power roleplay. The submissive offer themselves to their dominant player not only, so they are satisfied, but their needs are also met.

Psychiatrists used to deem sadomasochism as a mental illness. They argued that only cruel individuals would want to inflict pain on others even if both parties enjoyed the act. However, some medical professionals don’t necessarily see this as being the case anymore. Sadomasochism is simply a sexual interest like many other things, and as long as both parties involved consent, there is nothing wrong with it.
In BDSM, the most common acts of sadomasochism are Spanking, Bondage, and Humiliation. Even though it was stated earlier that even if both parties consent, there’s nothing wrong with it. This is not entirely true. For instance, if you inflict too much pain on the other player or use a material they are allergic to that puts them in the hospital, it doesn’t matter who consented.
